The Leaning Saguaro
It’s a fair estimate to assume this mighty icon of the southwest is at least one hundred years old. This stunning giant once stood tall, but now has raised great concern as it’s noticeably leaning. Considering its size, it would be more than just a shame if it fell; but most definitely a catastrophe to anything in its path. Not to mention, it would cost an absolute fortune to have it hauled off the property. We’ve hemmed and hawed over some possible solution, but the fate of this cactus was a continuous uncertainty. Until…
A knock to the door from a man claiming he could stabilize and straighten the giant saguaro for $300. We agreed. The next day, the massive Saguaro had a support system complete with a crank and pulley secured in three feet of concrete. We were instructed to crank the pulley one click tighter every week. Over the next year we should see the cacti’s skeletal framework begin to straighten.
All it took was a steel cable wire, a pulley, an old tire remnant, and a visit from the cactus fairy.
