Chicken Coops, Building it Right the First Time

From the very first coop to the current set-up… it’s been quite a journey at TBN Ranch. I’ve said a million times to build a coop right the first time, if you don’t, you’ll end up spending even more later. Here’s why…
Bargain coops aren’t a bargain if they only hold up for two years and you have to buy another. If they’re too small or hard to clean, chicken keeping becomes an unwanted chore, and that’s especially true in inclement weather.  How do I know? Well, as you can see, I’ve paid my dues…

Bottom line… plan, prepare, and know your goal…  before you buy or build, and always build bigger than you need. If you need ideas on coop types, or entire set-ups, visit me on Pinterest. You’ll find more than a thousand pics of chicken coop types, brooder & nest box ideas, building plans, set-up ideas, and way more.

Nesting Box Ideas

This looks like the caliber of a Donald Trump chicken coop, but there’s something here that could easily be incorporated into a coop owned by the rest  of us more common folk. I like the natural tree branch perches, and the best part is they’re free!  Just an idea… and I think our birds would appreciate them too.

Upgrading the Brooder

I’ve had my share of make shift brooders, and all the headaches that go with it. Anybody who has raised baby chicks knows all about cardboard boxes, plastic storage containers, dog crates, etc… as  make-do brooders.  Flimsy chicken wire tops that shred your arms during cleaning, and an aching back from crawling around the floor for six weeks is another consequence of not having the right equipment.

I searched online for something suitable to build for raising baby chicks.  My husband is willing to take the challenge, so this is what I found…

I want to raise this brooder up on legs, have two riser platforms for a drinker/feeder, and a bar attached above for a heat lamp.

Checklist for Building a Chicken Coop

There’s nothing worse than having to re-do your chicken coop set-up because you didn’t build it right the first time. This Chicken Coop Checklist offers good advice and great  suggestions on how to avoid those little problems that can easily turn into big headaches later. Keeping chickens shouldn’t be a huge chore, creating a functional space that is convenient to maintain will give you more freedom to enjoy your flock.
